Jada and Maya’s story…

We are delighted to share with you the inspirational story of Jada and Maya, just one of the families who have been helped by a wellbeing grant from FTCT.
Jada* is 15 years old and is a young carer for her mother Maya*, a previous employee of Sainsbury’s, who has been bravely tackling mental health problems since Jada was a baby.
Here, Maya tells their story…
“Jada is 15 years old and is not only my daughter, but also my carer. She is such an amazing support, helping me out around the house with daily tasks, as well as, giving me lots of emotional support while I continue to make a positive recovery from my mental health problems. My struggles started when Jada was a baby, as a result of emotional, mental and sexual abuse I suffered when I was young, and also in my adult life.
“I have always encouraged Jada to explore lots of activities and hobbies, to give her an alternative outlet from her responsibilities at home. She loves sports, but is particularly fond of (and good at) performing arts – including singing, dancing and acting.
“I luckily heard about FTCT through another charity I was working with, and because of my previous experience in retail, I was eligible to apply. I then called and made an application for a grant to put towards fees for a drama course, for Jada.
“I’m so glad I made the call, because FTCT awarded us the grant to cover the course fees for over four years, as well as travel costs, while Jada finished her studies at secondary school.
“I spent years feeling ashamed, not knowing that charities like FTCT are out there that care and are only too happy to help families like us. The grant has given Jada and me precious quality time together, without my mind being preoccupied with worrying about money. Jada’s self-image and belief in herself has soared; she has now enrolled on a Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Performing Arts at College!
“If your child needs help, don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and call FTCT – I’m so pleased that I did. Through the well-being grant my daughter has gained so much confidence!”
