Kim is a supermarket assistant for Waitrose, which is part of the John Lewis Partnership. She applied to FTCT for a grant for essential clothing and furniture for her and son Josh, aged nine. Here Kim tells her FTCT story:

“I’ve been in my job for five years. I heard about FTCT through my Partner Support Specialist at work. They provide help and advice for all John Lewis and Waitrose colleagues.”

“At the time I was going through a tough time personally.  My relationship had recently broken down, so Josh and I moved out to set up on our own. We didn’t have any furniture of our own and needed help with that.”

I was nervous about calling at first, but the grants team soon put me at ease. They didn’t need me to explain all the ins and outs of my whole personal situation which was reassuring. They made me feel hopeful that FTCT might be able to help us.

“I received a grant from FTCT towards new furniture for our new home plus school uniform and essential clothing.”

“The grant enabled me to buy a dining table and chairs, which has created my new favourite time of day. Josh and I can sit together and talk about our days and how we are both feeling. It’s difficult sometimes to raise a conversation with Josh, so dinner time is when we can chat uninterrupted which has in turn drawn us closer together after a very turbulent year.”

“I felt embarrassed about asking for help when I first applied, but I am so glad I did. It has had a really positive effect on me. To any other parents thinking of applying, I would say just do it. That first phone call will put you at ease and gives you a definite light at the end of the tunnel. It was so good to know FTCT were there to help.”
