Our Story News and Blog Back-to-School Budget Tips from Real Parents Back-to-school shopping can feel overwhelming, especially when uniforms, shoes, stationery and other essentials all need replacing at the same time. In our recent parent survey, many families shared the small things that help them stretch their budget and reduce stress during the back-to-school season. We've included one of our favourite tips below, along with a few additional ideas that may help you prepare for the new school year. "Don't underestimate the power of labelling! Buying things twice wastes money." It's such a simple suggestion, but it could save both money and hassle throughout the school year. Inspired by that advice, we've also put together a few more practical tips that may help make preparing for the new school year a little easier. 1. Label everything Labelling uniforms, PE kits, lunch boxes and water bottles can help prevent items from being lost or mixed up at school. Replacing missing belongings throughout the year can quickly become an unexpected expense, so taking a few minutes to label everything before term starts could save money in the long run. 2. Check what still fits before you shop Before buying anything new, encourage your child to try on last year's uniform, school shoes and PE kit. You may find that some items still fit perfectly, helping you avoid replacing things that don't actually need replacing. 3. Spread the cost where you can If your budget allows, buying one or two items throughout the summer can feel more manageable than purchasing everything in one go. It also gives you the opportunity to take advantage of seasonal sales, supermarket offers and loyalty schemes. 4. Explore second-hand options Many schools run second-hand uniform sales, while local school uniform banks and community groups offer affordable pre-loved items. Before buying everything new, it's worth seeing what's available in your area. FTCT's School Uniform Bank Directory can help you find school uniform banks and community schemes across the UK. 5. Use a checklist A simple checklist can help you keep track of what you already have, what still needs replacing and what you've already bought. It can also help avoid duplicate purchases and last-minute shopping. You can download FTCT's free Back-to-School Checklist from our website to help make planning for the new school year a little easier. Are you a parent struggling financially?
