For many families, back-to-school costs go beyond uniforms and stationery.

As children move through school, laptops and tablets are increasingly becoming part of everyday learning. Homework, research, revision and online learning platforms often require access to a device at home.

In fact, 28% of parents who responded to our recent Back-to-School Survey told us that buying a laptop or tablet for their child was a real financial concern.

If buying a device for school feels like one more expense on an already long list, there are a number of places you can turn for support and advice.

Speak to your child's school

Some schools have laptops or tablets that pupils can borrow or loan for use at home.

It's always worth asking what support is available, particularly if accessing a device is affecting your child's ability to complete homework.

Check for refurbished devices

Refurbished laptops and tablets can often be significantly cheaper than buying brand new, while still providing everything your child needs for schoolwork.

Buying from a reputable retailer can also give you added peace of mind through warranties or quality checks.

Look for local digital inclusion schemes

Some councils, charities and community organisations run digital inclusion programmes that provide free or low-cost devices to eligible families.

Support varies depending on where you live, so it's worth checking what's available in your local area.

Depending on your circumstances, charities may be able to help with the cost of essential items for children.

How FTCT helped one family prepare for a new school year

When Magdalena’s daughter Kyra needed a laptop and other essentials before starting sixth form, the family applied for support through FTCT. If you work in the UK fashion and textile industry and are finding it hard to make ends meet, FTCT may be able to help. We believe every child deserves the chance to thrive, which is why we provide grants to support families during challenging times.

Could you apply for an FTCT grant?

You may be eligible if:

• you work or have recently worked for a UK fashion or textile employer, and
• you are caring for a child under 18.

FTCT supports families experiencing financial difficulties due to:

• Financial hardship due to job loss, illness, or bereavement
• Being rehoused after homelessness or unsafe living conditions
• Long-term low income and ongoing financial pressure

What can an FTCT grant help with?

Our grants can contribute towards:

• Clothing and school uniforms
• Bedroom furniture
• Study equipment, including laptops
• White goods and essential household items
• Specialist or sensory equipment
• Therapy and wellbeing support
